SOSCA will be awarding three (3) Family Book Scholarships in the amount of $150 each  AND five (5) SOSCA Book Scholarships in the amount of $300 each. The deadline to turn in completed applications is Thursday, September 23, 2016. Winners will be announced at the October General Meeting.

Please fill out your application and attach proof of enrollment and turn in to Courtney Clerico at the City Centre, 2nd floor or email them to her at coclerico@kern.org.

SOSCA Negotiations Announcement

Please click here to read the letter regarding the results of SOSCA Negotiations. We hope to complete our vote on the above proposal on Wednesday, September 14, from 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at the Larry E. Reider Education Center (Room 202). Absentee ballots can be obtained from Daríe Sarad, SOSCA Director of Negotiations, at dawright@kern.org. Employees located at the City Centre, Larry E. Reider Education Center and the Access Center must be scheduled for leave time in order to be eligible for an absentee ballot.
Should the proposal pass, the salary increase will appear on the October end of month pay check.

Increase of Membership Dues

Effective January 1, 2016 SOSCA will be increasing dues from $1 to $2.

The following is just a small portion of the benefits SOSCA provides for classified staff.

  • Classified staff has received a COLA in each of the last three years: 3% in 2013, 2% in 2014 and 3% in 2015.
  • Book scholarships have been increased to provide 5 SOSCA Member Book Scholarships in the amount of $300 and 3 Family Book Scholarships in the amount of $150.
  • Classified staff have been able to retain high quality health benefits with no decrease in coverage.
  • Lunchtime Presentations are provided several times throughout the year.
  • Food, fun and gift cards provided at the Quarterly General Meetings.
  • Increased vacation hours.
  • Casual Friday dress.
  • Long Term Disability Coverage Plan.

2015-16 Bargaining Agreement Voted In

The tentative bargaining agreement between SOSCA and Kern County Superintendent of Schools has been voted in as contract for 2015-2016 by the members of SOSCA.

A recap of the changes are as follows:

  • 3% COLA effective 07-1-2015 – you will see the increase on your paycheck on July 31, 2015
  • Discontinue the one day of sick leave allotted for regular classified employees working Extended School Year (see Rules of the Personnel Commission 8.23.A)  date June 2016
  • Regulatory Clean-Up Language in Appendix E Catastrophic Leave/Continuation of Pay Status to align wording with Ed Code 44043.5 and to change the reference from 5 month differential pay to 100 day 50% pay as voted on in 2014-15

Who is SOSCA board member Amanda Cruz-Ardoin?

Job Title/Department:  School Secretary-Bilingual/Student Services

Position on SOSCA Board:  Director of By-Laws

How long have you been with KCSOS?  8 years

Why did you want to be a Board Member for SOSCA?  Initially, my interest in the SOSCA Board was fueled by my desire to serve my fellow classified employees in the same manner SOSCA has helped me. Furthermore, I have been curious about the inner-workings of our union, and how I can serve an active role..

What have you learned about SOSCA that you didn’t know before?  My most impactful experience with KCSOS has been interacting with the multitude of people who devote their lives to the success of their colleagues. They provide support for those in need, contractual upholding, and scholarship opportunities for the education of its members.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?  My recreation time is replete with family moments. From exciting road trips to weekend bike rides, my girls keep my life active and adventurous. Pursuing my career goals through higher education fill my remaining hours outside of KCSOS.
